The Issue of President Benes Decrees on the Czech-German relations
Krupičková, Michaela ; Kunštát, Miroslav (advisor) ; Kučera, Jaroslav (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the debate on the Benes Decrees in the European Parliament between 2002 and 2003, which took place in the context of the accession negotiations of the Czech Republic into the European Union. The paper is divided into three parts. The first chapter summarizes the development of relations between the Germany and the Czech Republic after 1989. Particular emphasis is placed on the emergence of Czech - German Declaration in 1997 and critical objection for annulment of presidential decrees. For the proper understanding and more insight into the problem, why the Benes decrees create such a barrier in the Czech-German relations, the second part of the thesis is dedicated to those decrees, which still arouses criticism and resistance. In this chapter are thus described various Decrees in detail - when and why they were established and what the consequences in practice mean for Czech and German population today. The third part is dedicated to the debate in the European Parliament, explores the attitudes and opinions of the individual politicians in the European Union and the Czech politicians, who were forced to respond to this situation. The chapter is closed by a short analysis of the referendum in the Czech Republic about the European Union, which took place in June 2003....

Humplíková, Kateřina ; Tomášek, Michal (advisor) ; Pítrová, Lenka (referee)
Legal aspects of the accession of Croatia to the European Union Abstract The EU enlargement policy is a fundamental instrument of the EU's foreign and security policy that enables Union to achieve its goals such as creating a common area of peace, stability and prosperity. Since the Western Balkans has experienced an armed conflict in the recent past and since these countries are direct neighbors of the European Union, the Balkan region represents an essentially important area in the strategic plans of the EU. The European Union as well as the Western Balkans' countries strives for the full integration into the European structures. In the context of the ongoing post-war reconstruction in the region Croatia's accession into the EU represents a significant historical moment. Croatia has already passed through the whole accession process and can act as a model example for other Balkan countries. In this thesis author mainly aims to map in detail the course of the accession process in general and understand the specifics of the Croatian accession in the context of the European policy towards Western Balkans. Although the EU has set down the accession criteria and procedural rules, accession process of every candidate state is different and depends on the actual situation of the country in question. Searching for Relationship with the EU: Turkey and Russia in the Light of the Role Theory
Beneš, Vít ; Drulák, Petr (advisor) ; Krines, Vlastimil (referee) ; Rovná, Lenka (referee) ; Voráček, Emil (referee)
This dissertation starts from the observation that expectations and perceptions of non-members of the EU are usually neglected in the study of EU's enlargement process. In order to better understand the sources of pro-integration (or anti-integration) foreign policies of the neighboring states, I employ the conceptual apparatus of "role theory". This work utilities the concept of "national role conception", defined as domestically shared views and understandings regarding the proper role and purpose of one's own state as a social collectivity in the international arena. On the cases of Russia and Turkey, I show how historically constituted domestically shared ideas about a role, function (or mission) of a particular state within wider international (European) environment inform their respective policies towards contemporary EU. For the Turkish elite's understandings of the proper role of Turkey within broader international environment is typical the dominance of kemalist nationalist discourse of modernization. Modernization and the quest for the status of respected European power form the core of Turkish identity. In light of this perceptions, the EU membership fits into the kemalist discourse as an accomplishment of the historical mission of attaining the standards of contemporary civilization. On the other side, the discourse of Russian elites is embedded predominantly in universalist messianic discourse, which is often spiced with realist and geopolitical concepts. To sum up, if we want to understand why Russia does not even think about the possibility of entering the EU, we have to take into account the burden of universalist tasks which Russia feels obliged to cary in the name of History or God. Moreover, Russia feels the obligation to protect (both from external threats and internal decay) Europe itself. Entrance into the EU would, quite logically, jeopardize the fulfillment of this historical tasks.

Humplíková, Kateřina ; Dvořáková, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Faturová, Marie (referee)
The thesis deals with a potential Turkey's enlargement of the European Union. The thesis deals especially with the eventual impact on member states and on the European Union as a whole. Main purpose of the thesis consists in the identification of aspects that together with the fulfilment of accession criteria are crucial for the decision-making in the European Union. At first the thesis presents the admission process and the conditions that every candidate state has to fulfil, then it analyses the gains of possible Turkish membership as seen by constructivists and rationalists and finally it features the attitudes of particular member states and important state representatives. The objective of the thesis was to prove that not only the fulfilment of the accession criteria is decisive for the European Union, but also the benefits and loses of such step for member states and for the European Union as a whole.
